Pamphlet ONE

In order to work out the mechanics of creating an artefact I am starting with a simple pamphlet. This fictional document will be modelled on the many genuine publications of the Printing and Publication Service.

At this stage the illustrations and layout are less important than the production of the pamphlet. The focus is very much on establishing the best paper choice and the best printing and binding method.

These pamphlet cartoons are light hearted and will hopefully provide a contrast to the darker edge I want the story to have.

In order to create an authentic finish and to replicate the limited printing options of the day I will need to reduce the range of tone and remove colour.

I want any humour to be ironic. Additionally I don't want to give the reader too much information; to paraphrase Graham Rawle, the story takes place in the space between the pictures.

The plans currently lack any power source so the lower legs could each house a diesel engine with exhausts in the calf area of the machines leg. This would give the lower leg considerable weight and provide ballast in the same way the engine does a double decker bus. It would also make it easier to access when inevitable break downs occur.

[It would be a nice touch to add a note about the flooding of engines and the moving of exhausts into the upper leg or even the torso, similar to the periscope exhaust on 4x4s.]

pamphlet three

Finished third draft pamphlet ready for todays crit. It is lacking text as one common denominator for all the War Office publications, a substantial body of very dry official text. The 'weathering' process (wetting, dilute ink staining, rubbing, drying and sand papering) has worked well however the drawings and text have remained very dark The fading of the real examples will have obviously taken decades so I will need to use a lighter tone when drawing and writing to create a similar effect.

Following todays crit I have finalised the pamphlet design. The manual is under way and the pamphlet as a booklet has informed its design and construction. For the final outcome the pamphlet will be simplified into something more likely to be handed to the troops in the trench.

Final Pamphlet

Pamphlet Evaluation

The initial versions were essentially simplified manuals. They served the purpose of helping work out the most appropriate design for the manual and also the best materials and methods for its construction. This final pamphlet is a peripheral artefact; I have done enough work and it is good enough to be included as an element of the final outcome. The cartoons feel much more at home in this simplified version so it is at least a suitable vehicle for these.
